Studying the mechanism robot motion on sand


The research done in Georgia Tech University explored the physics of movement of robots walking on sandy surfaces. The general conclusion reached wasthat the robots walking on sandy surfaces should move their legs slower than usual. Sandy surfaces present extra challenges because the characteristic of the surface can alternate between solid and liquid in an irregular and unpredictable pattern. The researchers performed the experiment by controlling the density of the sand at various levels. It is concluded that the speed of the robot could be optimized by adjusting the speed of limbs at various phases of the movement.
