Ground robots teaming with soldiers in the battlefield -

UGV - Unmanned Ground Vehicle

Modern militaries are steadily integrating ground robots—often called robotic combat vehicles (RCVs) or autonomous ground systems (AGS)—as force multipliers that enhance the reach, endurance, and situational awareness of human units. These platforms handle hazardous or burdensome tasks, allowing squads and platoons to operate more safely and focus on mission execution. Ukraine’s extensive use of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), including the delivery of more than 150 Milrem THeMIS systems through a Dutch-led initiative, illustrates how rapidly these technologies are entering real conflict zones. Confirmed deployments indicate a steady expansion of robotic support on the battlefield. UGVs are particularly valuable for reconnaissance and threat detection in complex environments such as dense urban […] Read More

BMW to make level 5 autonomous cars by 2021 -

BMW has said that they will be able to deliver level 5 Autonomous cars by 2021. A level 5 autonomy is the ultimate goal of autonomous driving and it means, the driver will completely be able to take his or her hands off the wheel, during the entire duration of the the trip. Self driving trucks deliver beer -

On October 20, 2016, Otto and Budweiser completed the world’s first shipment by a self driving truck. The truck drove itself for 120 miles in Colorado highways, where the driver was not at the driver seat. Given all the advancements, it looks like autonomous driving will also soon be just another automation that we take for granted today, just like computers playing chess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb0Kzb3haK8 Video source: Otto Read More

Robot ships are on the way -

The new ship deveoped by DARPA, has been designed for traveling on open seas for months, without a single crew member on board. In the test, the ship has reached 50 km / hour and will start to be tested this summer off California coast in Pacific. The robot ship will be used for locating enemy submarines completely autonomously and in case of conflict, engage if necessary. Source: DARPA.   Read More

Robot boats of US Navy -

In a sign that all warfare is becoming more and more taken over by robots and autonomous vehicles, the US Navy just demonstrated that it can accompany its ships with autonomous vehicles. These robot boats, would protect the main ship, which is of high value and containing soldiers. It would also swarm an enemy boat, deflect or destroy it. Making vehicles autonomous has been an ongoing major research and development task since over a decade in the field of robotics. This represents not only an application of autonomous navigation systems, but also a real life application of swarm robot concepts. Boeing And Liquid Robotics monitoring oceans -

Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Liquid Robotics, the market leader in unmanned ocean vehicles, today signed a global, multi-year teaming agreement for collaboration on product development, maritime services and operational deployments. The initial focus of the collaboration will be to develop total integrated solutions for anti-submarine warfare, maritime domain awareness and other maritime defense applications. “It’s a great opportunity to partner with Liquid Robotics to provide new and existing customers a unique portfolio of defense solutions and capabilities,” said Chris Chadwick, president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “This relationship allows the Boeing-Liquid Robotics team to solve maritime security and surveillance challenges in entirely new and highly effective ways and […] Read More

After autonomous cars, now driverless convoys -

A totally autonomous convoy of military vehicles has been successfully tested in Fort Hood, Texas, by the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and Lockheed Martin (also see Lockheed Martin press release) . The test included multiple vehicles of different models and was run in an environment, which included hazards and obstacles, such as road intersections, oncoming traffic, stalled and passing vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic circles in both urban and rural test areas. The demonstration, earlier this month, at Fort Hood, Texas was part of the Army and Marine Corps’ Autonomous Mobility Appliqué System (AMAS) program, and marked the completion of the program’s Capabilities Advancement Demonstration (CAD).
