A humanoid robot has several main systems working together which are:
Sensors: Cameras, microphones, tactile sensors, motion sensors and more….
AI: Through artificial intelligence, decision making, computer vision, navigation, motion planning, interactions with surroundings and all other systems are coordinated and managed.
Power Supply and Management Systems: Optimization of energy usage and efficient usage of available power is one of the main goals.
Actuation Systems: Presently rotating electric actuators are the main means of actuation in all advanced humanoid robots. Research is also underway for more humanlike, tendon based actuation systems.
Control Systems: Control system can be considered as a middle connection between the AI and all other systems, which executes the decisions made by AI and communicates directly with all components.
Mechanical Structure: The structure is the skeleton of the robot which physically contain all other components and hold them in place. It should be strong enough without adding too much weight, while also allowing mobility and motions.
Communication Interface: Effective communication between components of the robot as well as communication with surroundings are all part of communication interface.
Visit humanoid robot magazine, for more details on this topic, as well as more details on each system.
With recent improvements in AI, near future show promising results however, it should be remembered that the current AI is largely still in the form of LLMs, Large Language Models, which is still conversation based. The real problem to overcome in case of robotics is the physical AI, where the AI will be embodied in Robots.
