In Germany, a new type of flexible robotic arm has been developed in the shape of an Elephant’s trunk. The developers emphasized safety in developing this arm and no metallic parts are used. The arm is composed of three main segments and a hand axis. The movement is made possible by the air moving in and out between segments. The special design of the grippers make grasping of objects with as little force as possible, which in turn reduces the risk of damage or injuries and helps power efficiency. See video below, which shows how the arm is made in great detail:
The company has developed various biologically inspired robotic components. Among them are Jelly Fish, Flying Fins, Aquatic Rays, Human Robot Arm and many more. You can also visit company website, www.festo.com for more information on various products.
