Many of us remember IBM Watson, when it beat the human champions on the popular TV Show Jeopardy, three years ago. Since then, Watson has undergone constant improvements and has started to be used in practical real life areas, such as Medicine and Law. This is primarily due to its ability to process language, just as humans do. Now IBM is dedicating $1 billion in order to improve Watson’s abilities even further. A team of 2,000 researchers will focus on doing just that. Among the new improvements, open source and cloud-based applications are going to be implemented. We have talked about Watson various times in our magazine, as well. See […]

The latest and greatest consumer electronics show, CES 2014, took place in Las Vegas earlier this month. Here, Audi showed off its new autonomous car. For the first time, a self-driving car doesn’t look different from the regular ones, as far as the outward appearance. In comparison to having a lot of sensors and scanners and cameras outside, this car seems to have nothing extra looking than a normal passenger car. It is for sure autonomous cars are coming our way with full speed. A major study for Artificial Intelligence and NeuroScience, called the Human Brain Project (HBP), which aims to replicate the human brain on supercomputer, has recently been approved in the EU. 87 universities and hundreds of scientists from leading research institutions across Europe will participate in the study, but the project has some important Japanese and North American partners as well. The project will continue for 10 years, from 2013 to 2023 and will cost around 1.2 billion Euros. Human brain consists of 100 billion neurons which are connected by hundreds of thousands of billions synapses, which makes human brain the most complex machine we know of. The project brings the fields […]

The open source Robot Operating System (ROS) has recently celebrated its five year anniversary. We had made previous entries in Robotic Magazine about ROS, please see one of them here: https://www.roboticmagazine.com/software-ai/robot-operating-system-grows-exponentially which we had published when ROS was 3 years old. In that post, we were saying that the number of code packages had reached 1600, and it was growing exponentially. Today, two years later, that trend has not changed and now ROS has 3699 Public work packages. There are now more than 90 robot brands running on ROS. In order to get more facts and details, please visit Willow Garage website at: https://www.willowgarage.com/blog/2012/11/29/ros-celebrates-five-year-anniversary In the video below, you can […]

IBM’s dreams of creating a version of Watson that is voice activated and will answer questions a whole lot better than Siri, the voice activated personal assistant created by Apple. Watson will provide educated answers based on historical trends, scientific studies and location data. For those who are not familiar with Watson, it is the IBM AI program that had beaten human Champions at the popular TV show Jeopardy, last year. Watson 2.0, the next version of the product, will be designed to run on tablets and smart phones. There are still some technical difficulties that must be overcome before IBM can make Watson a hand held product. Though many […]
