Google wants to direct robots with Android and ROS -

In Google’s I/O conference last week, Google launched ROSjava, a ROS (Robot Operating System) framework in Java which is also compatible with Android devices. Using the application could make the robots more efficient and inexpensive due to taking care of much of the computing in cloud. With the android control, the robot can also get sensor data from tablets or mobile devices, when the two units connect each other. Jeopardy Champ Watson to help in Healthcare Industry -

IBM’s Watson computer, which became famous last month by beating human champions in Jeopardy, will be commercialized in Healthcare industry, according to a recent research and development agreement between IBM and Nuance Communications. The development project will combine Watson’s abilities in Language and Machine Learning and Nuance’s speech recognition and Clinical Language understanding abilities. The forecast for the first available commercial version is around 18-24 months. The project is also aided by Columbia University Medical Center and University of Maryland, where these institutions identify how a machine like Watson could be of more help in medicine by identifying most critical problems. The main goal is to aid the decision makers […] Read More

AI to race against humans in Jeopardy -

It is very well known that the computers are able to beat humans in games such as chess, where the brute force calculation of the probable positions into the depth of so many moves ahead would make it invincible. However, brute force calculation will not solve the trick for many games, such Jeopardy, where an understanding of the question and language is required at least to a certain extent. Now IBM claims it created a computer program which is able to understand the questions asked in the game and able to compete with the best human players around. A competition will take place this February, as announced by the game […] Read More

Robot Operating System grows exponentially -

Open source robotics software ROS has marked it 3rd birthday as the number of code packages reached to 1600, and the number of participants keeps growing exponentially. The main advantage of an open source robotics platform is that once a robotics problem is solved, the rest of the coders are able to use that code without starting from scratch. For original story, please visit here. Don’t forget to check out the video that shows many different robot platforms that is using ROS. ROS is clearly not the only open source operating system around. See Robotic Magazine’s software page for a current list. Read More

Computer learns language and facts by itself -

Carnegie Mellon University Researchers, under the funding of Google and DARPA, and benefitting from the internet database provided by Yahoo, are working on a self learning computer algorithm that is able to extract knowledge from the internet by itself, to learn language and facts. The system is called NELL, which stands for “Never Ending Language Learning System”, scans hundreds of millions of web pages everyday, and learns facts by itself, at an accuracy rate of 87 percent. So far, NELL learned 390,000 facts, which are grouped into symantec categories, such as universities, actors, cities etc… The number of categories so far is 274 and this number is growing. These facts […] Read More
